Swing Swing Swing

My second post will come tomorrow when I have time and patience for research. Today has been a crazy one at work and tonight will be filled with homework followed by some karaoke time with my besties at a local bar. Diet coke will be my drink of choice! Alcohol and my blood sugar are not friends, especially on a day like today where my numbers have been all over the place. After forgetting my insulin at home, I downed my breakfast before realizing that I didn't have it. The 30 minute drive back gave my numbers plenty of time to rise well past 200. After correcting with insulin, just before going outside for my 10:45 tour, my sugar dropped to 72. Not dangerous, but I was getting ready to make a 3/4 mile hike with a bunch of 7, 8, and 9 year olds. Downed some Gatorade and was off.

Lunch was awful. I had nothing at home except some things that were chalk full of carbs. I ate a lean cuisine microwaveable pasta dish and paid the price after lunch. Then while giving a presentation at an off site (told you I had a busy day), I crashed again. Lovely!

I'm now holding steady at 15o. Not where I want to be, but I'll try to bring it down after work. I think a short bike ride might be in order.

What do you do when you begin swinging? Anybody have any secret tricks?

  1. Hey Sarah Jane! So glad you found my blog! It's such a great outlet for me...I hope it helps you too! I've been through Joplin many, many times! We lived in Kansas City for 2 1/2 years, and more recently in Tulsa. Also have lived in Texas-- and Joplin was on our route to family in Iowa. Pretty part of the country!
Oh and yes.....they still call it MDI! That's what Jada is on!

  2. Oh....it seems with the swinging....it's hard to stop once you start. With Jada- I really try hard not to over correct a low. 4-8 grams of carbs often works best....but I have to keep an eye on her to make sure it's actually bringing her up. I've had times where a juice box (15g) won't even bring her up. Also- the kinds of carbs are important- a slice of whole wheat bread (14g) works well for her, b/c it has a lot of fiber, which slows down the absorption and she's less likely to swing so much. ugh... don't know if any of that makes sense.
